PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins have hired Tony Granato as an assistant coach.

The 45-year-old spent the last six seasons as an assistant and head coach of the Avalanche but was fired in June after Colorado finished with a franchise-worst record since moving to Denver in 1995.

"We are excited to have a guy who's accomplished as much as Tony join our staff as an assistant coach," Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said in a release.

"In addition to his 13 years as an NHL player, he's also been a head coach and assistant coach for six years with the Avalanche, and all of that experience will make him a tremendous asset to the Penguins organization."

Granato complied a 215-104-17-16 career record with Colorado, leading them to a Northwest Division title in 2003.

As a player he spent 13 seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose and posted 248 goals and 244 assists in 773 career games.
