The Penguins aren't going to send the young centre back to the OHL's Peterborough Petes.

Staal has recorded four goals and one assist in his first nine games this season.

His three-year NHL rookie contract will kick in once he plays in his 10th game. Pittsburgh's next game is Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Penguins general manager Ray Shero says Staal's work ethic, maturity and consistent effort have helped him make the transition to the NHL.

Staal's older brother Eric plays for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Meanwhile, the Penguins are sending 19-year-old defenceman Kris Letang back to Val d'Or of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
