PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Flyers signed defenceman Braydon Coburn to a US$2.6-million, two-year contract extension Wednesday.

Coburn will earn $1.2 million in 2008-09 and $1.4 million the following year.

"Braydon is a good young defenceman that we believe will continue to get better," Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said in a statement.

Entering Wednesday night's game against Carolina, Coburn had eight assists and 28 penalty minutes in 23 games.

"It feels good, absolutely," Coburn said. "This really was not planned. The Flyers just contacted my agent and said that they were interested in getting a deal done right now and so that is what we did. I'm excited."

Coburn, 22, will earn US$942,400 this season. The six-foot-five, 220-pounder was acquired by the Flyers from Atlanta in exchange for Alexei Zhitnik on Feb. 24.

Coburn was selected by the Thrashers with the eighth overall pick of the 2003 NHL entry draft.
