Pittsburgh’s Beau Bennett took a booming hit from Washington’s T.J. Oshie and crashed into the boards hard Monday. Bennett did not return and could be out “a little while,” according to Penguins coach Mike Sullivan. Bennett has missed 97 games in the past three seasons.

In the past three seasons, Pittsburgh Penguins right winger Beau Bennett has missed 97 games due to injury. Bennett, 24, had already missed five games this season due to an undisclosed injury, and after taking a huge hit Monday from Washington Capitals right winger T.J. Oshie, Bennett is about to miss more time.

Oshie’s check on Bennett came late in the first period with Bennett attempting to keep a puck in the Washington zone. Bennett had corralled the puck at the blueline and was about to fire it back deep into the Capitals end when Oshie approached him from his lift. Bennett, who didn’t see Oshie coming, shot the puck at the exact moment Oshie delivered the hit and sent Bennett shoulder first into the boards. Check out the hit:

The collision was huge and Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin tried to mix it up with Oshie following the hit, but Oshie didn’t drop the gloves landing Dumoulin a minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.

It seems as though Bennett knows immediately that something is wrong, as when he’s getting back to his skates he grabs his right shoulder and heads off the ice. On the replay, you can see Bennett’s shoulder lead into the boards followed by the rest of his body.

Luckily for Bennett, none of the injuries that have sidelined him for long stretches of time have been shoulder related. He’s had a couple of undisclosed upper-body injuries, but throughout Bennett’s NHL career, his ailments have been wrist-related. One concern could be — especially with the way Bennett clutched his shoulder — that he either broke his collarbone or separated his shoulder on impact. Post-game, new Penguins coach Mike Sullivan couldn’t specify what the injury way.

“I don’t have any specifics other than it’s my understanding that we’re going to lose him for a little while,” Sullivan told the Penguins’ Michelle Crechiolo. “I think over the next 24-48 hours we’ll have a better understanding as far as the timeframe is concerned, but that’s what I have right now.”

In 24 games this season, Bennett had already set a career-high with five goals and his 10 points were five shy of a new career-best mark. He was on pace for 16 goals and 32 points.
