Ovechkin ties Nash in Rocket race with insane hand-eye coordination

Alex Ovechkin tied Rick Nash for the NHL’s goal scoring lead on Thursday night, and he did it the way only he could. With the Capitals tied 1-1 with the Senators, Ovechkin batted a puck out of midair into the net. Ovechkin’s goal stood as the game-winner.

During the All-Star Game’s Skills Competition, Alex Ovechkin tried three times to bat a puck out of midair after it had been lobbed to him by St. Louis Blues winger Vladimir Tarasenko. He whiffed on all three attempts.

With that in mind, it’s possible to chalk up Ovechkin’s tally on Thursday night as lucky. But the puck he batted out of mid-air into the Ottawa net was only coming at him faster and while he was under duress. So, no, it’s more likely that the greatest goal scorer of the NHL’s current era probably isn’t so much lucky as he is good.

The marker was Ovechkin’s 32nd of the season, which ties him with Rick Nash for the NHL’s goal scoring lead, and came less than a minute after Washington’s Evgeny Kuznetsov scored to tie the game at 1-1. Senators netminder Robin Lehner had no chance and defenseman Erik Karlsson couldn’t contain the Washington Capitals superstar.

Ovechkin’s outstanding goal would stand as the game winner, as the Capitals downed the Senators 2-1.
