Olympic men's hockey gold was a main goal of these Games for the Russians and their leader, Vladimir Putin. But now, after another devastating quarterfinal loss, the host nation won't even play for a medal.

Despite taking a 1-0 lead early on, thanks to an Ilya Kovalchuk marker, the Russians trailed 2-1 after the first period. Juhamatti Aaltonen got the Finns on the scoreboard and the ageless wonder Teemu Selanne put them in the lead less than 10 minutes later.

In the second, Selanne picked up his second point of the game, an assist on Mikael Granlund's goal that gave the Finns a two-goal lead they would never surrender. Despite the fact Russia outshot Finland 14-5 in the third period, they couldn't mount any offense. In the end, Russia held a 38-22 shot advantage, but couldn't beat Tuukka Rask more than once.

With the win, Finland advances to the semifinal against Sweden Thursday. With the loss, Russia exits the tournament. The Russians have not won an Olympic medal in men's hockey since 2002, when they earned the bronze.
