I was lucky enough to get two tickets to Game 7 at “The Joe” to witness history in the making and wow, what a night.

My 11-year-old son Brendan, who just happens to be a huge Sidney Crosby and Pittsburgh Penguins fan, and I made the four-hour trip from our home to Detroit for the game.

I had never been to a Stanley Cup final game before, let alone a Game 7, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from the Detroit faithful when my son proudly wore his Crosby jersey.

We got to The Joe around 5:30 p.m. and from that point on began formulating a lifetime memory.  The atmosphere outside the arena was electric and I was surprised by the number of Pens fans there.  As we walked around many fans high-fived Brendan telling him tonight was their night.

One fan came up and told him this was the 87th game of this year's playoffs, so tonight was going to be Sid's night. However, one of the things I was most impressed with was how gracious and sportsmanlike the Red Wing fans were before, during and after the game.

During the game we were treated to a classic match on the ice, what a game.

Throughout the game there were chants of Go Wings Go, followed by Go Pens Go; it was magical. When the game finally ended and the Pens emerged victorious, I was again impressed with the sportsmanship the Wings fans displayed; it was amazing.

Wing fan after Wing fan congratulated my son on Pittsburgh's victory as we watched the award presentations and one fan even gave Brendan the stuffed Penguin she brought to the game (although it did have a rope around its neck).

As we finally left Joe Louis, having soaked it all in, more Wings fans congratulated Brendan as we headed to our van.  It was a wonderful display of sportsmanship and one both of us will remember forever.

So although the Wings didn't win the 2009 Stanley Cup, they should definitely be proud of their classy fans.

Thanks for the memory, Joe, and congrats to the Pens!
