STANSTEAD, Que. - The four NHL teams Pat Burns coached in his 15-year career joined with the league to donate $50,000 towards the construction of an arena in his name and to a scholastic fund, mayor Philippe Dutil announced Friday.

The NHL as well as the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils will contribute to the Pat Burns Arena in Stanstead, Que., near the Canada/U.S. border.

''We look forward to getting started with the construction of the arena very soon,'' Dutil said in a statement.

A frail-looking Burns attended the announcement of the project on March 26 along with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Quebec government officials. Burns is suffering through a third bout of cancer.

The federal and provincial governments together pledged two-thirds of the estimated $8.5 million cost of the arena, which is slated to open in 2011.

Burns is the only coach to win the Jack Adams award as NHL coach of the year three times.
