TORONTO - The National Hockey League suspended Washington Capitals defenceman Mike Green for three games Saturday.

He delivered an elbow to the head of Florida forward Michael Frolik in the first period of Friday night's 4-1 win over the Panthers. Frolik was not seriously hurt.

Green, who was given a minor penalty for elbowing on the play, suffered a bruised thigh later in the game. He had to be helped off the ice after colliding with Dmitry Kulikov during the pursuit of a loose puck.

Green will forfeit US$81,606.21 in salary. He'll be eligible to return Friday night against Atlanta.
