TORONTO - Brian Burke has apologized for the Maple Leafs' handling of the signing of Swedish defenceman Jonas Frogren in the wake of the NHL's decision to fine Toronto $500,000 and strip it of a fourth-round 2009 entry draft pick.

"The Toronto Maple Leafs acknowledge and apologize for the error of judgment," the general manager said in a brief news release distributed during the Philadelphia-Toronto game Wednesday night.

"The club accepts the punishment handed down by the league and will not be commenting further on the matter."

Cliff Fletcher was in charge when Frogren's services were acquired last summer.

Frogren, who has been on the injured list since early March, had been under contract to a Swedish elite league club before joining the Leafs. The transaction apparently contravened the collective bargaining agreement.
