DiPietro, who was already slated to have the night off, didn't dress for the game or sit on the bench. The Islanders would only say that he was out because of an undisclosed lower body injury. He is expected back in goal Thursday against Montreal for the second game of New York's weeklong homestand.

Mike Dunham got the start and Wade Dubielewicz was recalled from Bridgeport of the AHL to serve as his backup against Ottawa.

Hunter will be out of action quite a bit longer. The forward sprained his knee and is expected to be sidelined for two-to-four weeks.

The right-winger, who has four goals and two assists in 26 games was injured in the final minutes of the Atlantic Division-leading Islanders' 7-4 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday.

It's the second injury to a key Islanders forward in just over a week. The team lost captain and leading scorer Alexei Yashin for up to a month when he sprained his right knee Nov. 25 against Washington.

The Islanders, who entered Tuesday's game with a one-point lead in the division, scored four goals total in their first two games without Yashin, both losses. They are 2-0 since then, scoring 12 goals.

New York recalled forward Jeremy Colliton from Bridgeport on Tuesday and planned to use him on the fourth line.

Colliton scored in four straight games with Bridgeport, including the overtime winner at Lowell on Saturday. He has five goals and five assists in 22 games.

Colliton had a goal and an assist in 19 games with the Islanders last season.
