Nathan MacKinnon receives boarding major for shove on Luke Schenn

Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon may be facing supplemental discipline after he received a boarding major for a hit on Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Luke Schenn.

It’s hard to imagine there was a time this season when questionable hits were few and far between. On an almost nightly basis it seems there’s a new hit to discuss, and Saturday night was no different.

During Saturday’s tilt between the Colorado Avalanche and Philadelphia Flyers, Avs center Nathan MacKinnon delivered a shove to the back of Flyers defenseman Luke Schenn, resulting in a five minute major for boarding:

MacKinnon isn’t the type of player to throw dirty or malicious hits, and it’s hard to believe the intent of the hit was to hurt Schenn. It was an unfortunate confluence of events, beginning with a player – Schenn – preparing to brace for contact and MacKinnon putting himself in a position to check Schenn when the two were nearer to the boards.

To make matters worse, it appears that Schenn toe-picked after the shove, subsequently driving his shoulder and head into the boards. He did not return to the game, and early reports are that Schenn will be day-to-day with a shoulder injury. Hopefully he won’t also have a concussion to go along with that.

It’s hard to tell whether this will result in a phone call with the Player of Department Safety for MacKinnon, especially after New York Rangers’ winger Chris Kreider faced no supplemental discipline for a similar check on Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin.
