Mourning the loss of Greg Stathis

The Georgia hockey community is mourning the loss of a great man who touched the lives of many.

Greg Stathis, the head coach of Georgia Tech Hockey died earlier this month. Greg was the leader of the GT hockey team for the past 17 years. His dedication and commitment to the sport were felt at Georgia Tech as well as throughout the southern hockey community.

Greg and his brother George owned the only free standing hockey pro shop in Atlanta and they founded the Hockey Time USA inline league. Greg's dedication to hockey brought the joy of the sport to literally thousands of children and adults in the south.

A service was held in Atlanta following his burial in Staten Island, N.Y. The service was attended by approximately 1000 friends, players and family members. I counted over 20 different team sweaters that were worn by the players who loved and respected their coach as they honored his passing with a stick salute.

On a personal note, Greg helped me introduce the sport to both of my boys. Thanks to him my family's life is enriched by our sport. Greg will be missed dearly!

Jim Fissel, Atlanta, Ga.
