MONTREAL - The City of Montreal has settled with merchants whose stores were ransacked during the 1993 Stanley Cup riot.

An all-news channel reported today the city will pay a total of $550,000 to storeowners and their insurers.

Of that amount, $200,000 will go for legal fees.

Many businesses were trashed 14 years ago after the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup by defeating the Los Angeles Kings.

Many merchants are not satisfied with the amount.

Almost 40 lawsuits were filed against the city after the rampage amid charges that Montreal police acted too slowly to contain the violence.

Those lawsuits sought about $2 million in damages.

The Canadiens have not won the Stanley Cup since.
