MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens claimed tough guy Brad Staubitz off re-entry waivers from the Minnesota Wild on Monday.

Staubitz is an impending free agent and the Habs will only be on the hook for half of his US$600,000 salary.

The 27-year-old was held without a point and registered 73 penalty minutes in 43 games with the Wild this season.

In 196 career NHL games with San Jose and Minnesota, he has eight goals and 18 points.
