Marchand scores eight seconds after opening faceoff, sets Bruins record for fastest goal

Brad Marchand has been red hot and it didn’t take long for him to score his 13th goal in his past 13 games. Eight seconds into Sunday’s game against Detroit, Marchand fired a shot past Petr Mrazek, setting the Bruins record for fastest goal to start a game.

Few players have been hotter since the all-star break than Boston’s Brad Marchard. Heading into Sunday’s afternoon game against the Detroit Red Wings, Marchand had 12 goals in his past 12 games, and was looking to keep his hot streak going.

But even with as hot as Marchand has been, not even he could have expected to find the back of the net as quickly as he did Sunday. Off the opening faceoff, Detroit’s Brendan Smith iced the puck resulting in a faceoff in the Red Wings’ zone only six seconds into the contest. Boston’s Brett Connolly won the offensive zone clean and the puck skittered back to Marchand, who fired it through traffic and on net, beating a screened Petr Mrazek:

After Marchand scored, the Bruins announced his goal — which lit the lamp eight seconds in — was the fastest in franchise history to start a game. That means Marchand has put his name in a record book that also contains names of legends such as Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito and Ray Bourque.

Marchand now has 13 goals in his past 13 games and has scored in each of the past seven games. He now has 28 on the season, which matches his career-best mark set back in 2011-12. The goal also gave Marchand 42 points this season, tying his 2014-15 point total in 26 fewer games.

With the way Marchand is playing, he’s setting himself up for a monster contract extension, which could come as early as July 1. Marchand, 27, currently has one more season remaining on a four-year, $18-million deal he signed back in September 2012. His $4.5 million cap hit is a steal right now for the way he’s producing, but Marchand could be well over $5 million on his next deal.
