TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs signed centre Darryl Boyce to an NHL entry-level contract, the team announced on Tuesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Boyce, 23, has played 32 games as a rookie this season with the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies, and has recorded six goals, 22 points and 56 penalty minutes. The native of Summerside, P.E.I., leads the Marlies with a plus-17 rating.

Boyce went undrafted in the NHL Entry Draft and spent the past two seasons playing for the University of New Brunswick, where he scored 29 goals and 65 points in 53 Canadian Interuniversity Sport games.

He was the CIS's rookie of the year in 2005-06 and was named the most valuable player when UNB won the 2007 University Cup, the national championship.

"In his first year of professional hockey, Darryl has stepped right in and proven to be a versatile and important contributor to the success of the Toronto Marlies in the first half of the season," said Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson.

Boyce played 262 games for the Ontario Hockey League's Toronto St. Michael's Majors from 2001-05.
