TORONTO - The Monster is returning to the Maple Leafs crease for another two years.

Toronto signed goaltender Jonas Gustavsson to a US$2.7-million, two-year contract extension Thursday.

The six-foot-three Swede, whose nickname is The Monster because of his size, was eligible to become a restricted free agent this summer.

Gustavsson, 25, had a tumultuous rookie season, undergoing two heart surgeries and missing time with a groin injury before recording a seven-game win streak in March.

He was one of six Leafs players who received a special mention from GM Brian Burke at his year-end media conference Wednesday.

"After a tough start, he put together some real good hockey for us late," Burke said.

Gustavsson finished with a record of 16-15-9 and a .902 save percentage and 2.87 goals-against average. He is also Toronto's nominee for the Masterton Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Gustavsson is expected to join Sweden at next month's IIHF World Hockey Championship in Germany.
