TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenceman Tim Gleason on unconditional waivers for the purpose of buying him out.

Gleason will remain on the Leafs' salary cap for the next four seasons because this is a standard buyout.

Toronto already used its two compliance buyouts—which don't count against the salary cap—on Mike Komisarek and Mikhail Grabovski.

Gleason will cost US$833,333 against the cap next season, $1,833,333 in 2015-16 and then $1,333,333 in 2016-17. He had two more years left on his deal at a cap hit and salary cost of $8 million total.

The Leafs traded for Gleason on Jan. 1, sending John-Michael Liles to the Carolina Hurricanes.
