It was a rough first period, with Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang briefly leaving the game after taking a hit from behind from Tampa Bay winger Ryan Callahan (a play for which Callahan received a five-minute major for boarding) and Lightning center Tyler Johnson needing help leaving the ice with an apparent leg injury following a collision with Penguins winger Chris Kunitz, although Johnson returned, too, midway through the second period. Additionally, with less than five minutes to play in the third period, Pens defenseman Brian Dumoulin needed helped off the ice and left the game following a hard hit into the boards from Tampa winger Ondrej Palat. The Lightning went on to win Game 1 3-1, backed by 25 saves from goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy in relief, including all 16 shots faced in a third-period Penguins' barrage.
