Two more weeks. That’s all fans will have to wait to learn the identity of the Las Vegas expansion team, as the franchise finally announced a date for unveiling their name and logo.

No more rumors, no more rumblings, no more speculation and no more date changes. The Las Vegas franchise has officially announced that the team is getting its name, and the wait is only two more weeks.

After months of guesswork as to when the team would actually unveil it’s name, Las Vegas, the NHL’s 31st franchise, has set a Tuesday, Nov. 22 date for their official name and logo announcement. The event, which is set to be attended by commissioner Gary Bettman, owner Bill Foley and GM George McPhee, will take place in the early evening at the Toshiba Plaza, located outside the T-Mobile Arena, the future home of the Las Vegas franchise.

The unveiling is set to come after months of speculation not only about what the team would be named and use as a primary logo, but after weeks of talk about when the team would finally make public their identity, something many in the league have been waiting for since the day the team was awarded to Las Vegas back in late June.

In the months since the June announcement, Foley has been very open about the naming process, as well as talking at length about the process of designing the logo and jersey. The franchise has been working with the league and Adidas, who will be taking over jersey designs throughout the league come the start of the 2017-18 season.

Originally, the plan was for Foley and Co. to have a name selected, logo designed and undergo the grand unveiling ahead of the start of the season, with one of the goals being to have merchandise in place for the Kings’ set of exhibition games, dubbed Frozen Fury, in early October. However, the process lasted much longer than Foley would have expected, and the date for the announcement has subsequently been pushed back on more than a couple occasions.

As for what the team will be called, the rumor-mill has been somewhat mum since the flood of information that came out earlier in the campaign when the team appeared to be closing in on its name. A number of names were trademarked — some as apparent misdirection, which Foley has since denied — and it appears the franchise will carry the name Knights in some way.

It had long been reported that Foley was interested in naming the team Black Knights, as a nod to his alma mater, U.S. Army West Point, but difficulties securing the name led Foley’s franchise to switch directions ever so slightly, and the most likely monikers for the club now appear to be Golden Knights, Silver Knights or Desert Knights. Foley called the selected name “99 percent as good” as Black Knights.

What exactly the color scheme will be is likely based on what the club goes by, but there’s a good chance a steelish silver color is included in some way, and Foley has said that the color scheme will evoke the desert environment.

Regardless of what the team is called, though, it’ll be nice to have some finality when it comes to Las Vegas’ naming situation. The team has gone months without an identity, but in two weeks, the league will learn the name of their newest foe.
