Kings claim Marty Murray off waivers from Flyers and put Brent Sopel on IR

Murray, 31, had 15 points (2-13) and four penalty minutes in 11 games with the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms. The five-foot-nine, 180-pound native of Deloraine, Man., has 71 points (31-40) and 37 penalty minutes in 242 NHL regular-season games with the Flyers, Carolina and Calgary.

He was originally selected by Calgary in the fourth-round, 96th overall, in the 1993 entry draft.

Sopel, 29, has nine points (4-5) and four penalty minutes in 14 games with the Kings this season. The six-foot-two, 205-pound native of Calgary has missed the last two games due to injury. The assignment to injured reserve is retroactive to Nov. 4.

CANUCKS MOVE: Defenceman Nathan McIver of Summerside, P.E.I., was reassigned to the AHL's Manitoba Moose after playing one game for the Vancouver Canucks. Defenceman Phil Cole of Winnipeg was released from a professional tryout contract and sent to the ECHL's Victoria Salmon Kings to make room for McIver.

POTULNY RECALLED: Centre Ryan Potulny has been recalled by the Flyers from their AHL farm team in Philadelphia. The 22-year-old American centre, a college all-star at Minnesota last winter, had four points (2-2) and eight penalty minutes in eight AHL games.

ZANON RECALLED: The Nashville Predators have recalled defenceman Greg Zanon from their AHL affiliate in Milwaukee. Zanon, 26, from Burnaby, B.C., played Thursday and Friday for the Admirals on a conditioning assignment.

BROOKBANK DEMOTED: Defenceman Wade Brookbank and left-winger Jeff Hoggan were sent to the Providence, R.I., AHL affiliate and right-winger Petr Tenkrat has been recalled by the Boston Bruins.

"I want to win," GM Peter Chiarelli, the former assistant GM of the Ottawa Senators, told the Boston Globe in explaining the slight shakeup of a team that is 14th in the Eastern Conference. "I've never lost.

"In Ottawa, were never not made the playoffs so this kills me."

Tenkrat, 29, had nine points (2-7) with Providence. He hasn't played an NHL game since April 2002 when he was with Nashville. All three cleared waivers before the moves were announced.

Defenceman Jason York underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Friday, said coach Dave Lewis.

WILLIAMS HURT: Detroit forward Jason Williams will miss at least two more games while recovering from the concussion he suffered after being checked by Edmonton's Raffi Torres last Wednesday.

BIG DECISION: The Rangers have to decide by Monday whether to place defenceman Darius Kasparaitis on waivers or bring him back from the minors. The CBA prohibits conditioning assignments from lasting more than 14 days.

DOAN OUT: Phoenix captain Shane Doan doesn't require surgery but will be out of the Coyotes lineup for up to three weeks with a lingering back injury.

SPOTTING SUNDIN: Despite a right elbow injury that is keeping him out of the Toronto lineup, Leafs captain Mats Sundin was to launch the Esso NHL Street Buds street hockey program at the city's downtown Brown Community Centre on Sunday afternoon. Sundin is the program's honourary captain. More than 5,000 boys and girls take part at 50 community centres and schools each year.
