A week after Dan Church surprisingly stepped down as coach of the Canadian Women's Olympic team, the team filled the role with a former NHL player and coach.

On Tuesday, the team named Kevin Dineen the new boss heading into Sochi. Dineen coached in the NHL with the Florida Panthers for parts of three seasons and in 2011-12 he led the team to its first playoff appearance in more than a decade. But after a major step back in the shortened 48-game season and a slow start to this one, Dineen was fired and replaced by Peter Horachek.

The Canadian Women's team will go to Sochi trying to defend the gold medal it won in 2010. On the day of Church's resignation last week, the Canadians lost 5-1 to the USA, but beat them in each of the three previous matches.

The team roster will be finalized in early January.
