Karri Ramo’s robs Corey Perry with awesome reach-back blocker stop

Calgary Flames netminder Karri Ramo hasn’t had the best season so far, but he’s found himself on the highlight reel a few times. Tuesday night, he robbed Anaheim Ducks winger Corey Perry with a spectacular reach-back blocker save in the second period.

Calgary goaltender Karri Ramo’s performance last season helped him play his way into a one-year, $3.8-million contract with the Flames in the off-season. Though, he hasn’t been anywhere near as good in 2015-16, Ramo still has the ability to make some spectacular stops.

The Flames and Ducks had played to a 2-2 draw midway through Tuesday’s night game when Anaheim winger Corey Perry fought his way through a check and right to the front of the Calgary net. The puck was bouncing around and skipped into the air over the shoulder of Ramo. With the Flames netminder down and seemingly out, Perry attempted to bat the puck out of mid-air and towards the net.

Usually, this would end with us talking about Perry’s great hand-eye coordination or how he stuck with the play to give the Ducks the lead, but not this time. Perry’s chance to score a highlight-reel tally was stolen from him by an incredible reach-back blocker stop by Ramo:

Making Ramo’s save better is that he didn’t just turn the puck aside, he smashed it out of harm’s way. That’s as important — if not more so — as it was that he knocked the puck out of mid-air.

Seven minutes later, Michael Frolik scored to put the Flames ahead, but the lead didn’t hold. With four minutes of the third period puck drop, the Ducks had scored twice to tie the game and subsequently take the lead, with Perry exacting his revenge with the go-ahead, game-winning goal.

Ramo, spectacular save aside, finished with a 27 stops on 31 shots — a save percentage of .871. On the season, Ramo is boasting a 6-8-0 record, 3.12 goals-against average and .898 SP. His 42 goals against are the sixth-most of all goaltenders in the league.
