ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Josh Engel scored the winner in the shootout for Toronto as the Marlies beat the Abbotsford Heat 3-2 in American Hockey League action Monday.

Justin Hodgman also scored in the shootout for Toronto, while Colin Stuart replied for the Heat. Engel put a deke on Heat starter David Shantz and finished it off going low glove-side in the fourth round. Alex Berry then failed to score in the fifth round for Marlies, but so did the Heat's Garth Murray to seal the Toronto win.

Toronto opened the scoring near the five-minute mark of the first when Berry put home the rebound off Engel's point shot.

Abbotsford opened up a 2-1 lead in the second thanks to goals from Jason Jaffray and Stuart.

Jaffray evened things 1-1 when he picked up a drop pass from Evan Barlow and beat MacDonald stick side for his first goal in five games.

Ten minutes later the Heat took their first lead of the game when Stuart threw the puck towards the Marlies net and had it deflect twice to beat MacDonald.

The Heat got into penalty trouble and it cost them before the period was out. Justin Hodgman tied things up at two on the power play when he broke away and put a nifty deke on Shantz for his third of the season.

Abbotsford had an excellent chance to go ahead late in the third as Brett Sutter feathered a beautiful pass across to Olivier Latendresse, but the Heat forward couldn't beat MacDonald.

Toronto finished the night 1-for-6 on the power play, while Abbotsford went 0-for-8 with the man advantage.

Shantz made 26 saves in the loss, while MacDonald also made 26 stops to pick up the win.
