ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Jordan Knackstedt helped Providence earn a pair of crucial points in the shootout as the Bruins edged the Abbotsford Heat 4-3 in American Hockey League action Tuesday night.

Knackstedt went five-hole in the third round of the shootout on Heat starter David Shantz to seal the win for the Bruins, who never trailed in the game.

"Just going in I kind of have one move I kind of like to do, so I tried it on him and it worked," Knackstedt said.

The Bruins right-winger gave Providence a 2-1 lead in the first period when he finished off a 2-on-1 with Trent Whitfield.

Craig Weller and Mikko Lehtonen added the other goals for the Bruins, who improved to 30-28-3-0 with the win.

"(The Heat are) a pretty good team, they've got guys after you on the forecheck," added Knackstedt. "I think we did a pretty good job weathering the storm to start the game and then we just took it from there."

The Heat (31-24-9) played from behind all night but managed to tie things with a late third-period goal by Shawn Weller to force overtime. David Van Der Gulik and Brett Sutter had the other Abbotsford goals.

Heat forward Jason Jaffray said Tuesday night's game was a tough one after a long nine-game, 16-day road trip.

"It's a tough mental game obviously when you come back from such a successful trip," Jaffray said. "It's a long trip back from the East Coast and it's tough mentally for a lot of guys, especially the young guys."

With the loss, the Heat saw their season-high five game-winning streak snapped.

Jaffray was one of five shooters stopped in the shootout by Bruins starter Kevin Regan.

"I hate the shootout, but it comes down to one goal in the shootout that decides a point," said Jaffray. "We'll take one point out of that. Our division is so close that we'll take any points that we can get."

Abbotsford managed the only goal of the game with the man advantage while holding the Bruins scoreless on two chances.

Shantz made 30 saves in the loss, while Regan made 29 saves for his seventh win of the season.
