Jets’ Dustin Byfuglien boards Wild’s Jason Pominville with dangerous hit

Sunday night, Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien threw a borderline hit on Minnesota Wild winger Jason Pominville. Pominville was on his knees and attempting to get to his feet when he was boarded by Byfuglien.

Getting hit by Winnipeg Jets blueliner Dustin Byfuglien — all 6-foot-5, 260 pounds of him — looks like an unpleasant experience. It looks even more uncomfortable when Byfuglien leans into a player who’s already falling. With the Jets leading the Wild late in the third period, Minnesota right winger Jason Pominville was skating down the left wing and into the Winnipeg zone when he was dropped to his stomach after taking a trip from Byfuglien. As Pominville scrambled to his feet and got up to his knees, Byfuglien slammed him from behind into the boards: Byfuglien was handed a two-minute minor for boarding and, thankfully, Pominville was able to skate off under his own power. Pominville was back out on the ice for the ensuing power play, but the Wild were unable to convert. The Jets, who were up 5-1 early in the second period, hung on for the 5-4 victory over the Wild. It was Winnipeg’s first win in their past three games.
