COLUMBUS, Ohio - Blue Jackets forward Jared Boll was given a one-game automatic suspension Friday by the NHL for instigating a fight within the final five minutes of the Columbus-Colorado Avalanche game Thursday night.

Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock was fined US$10,000, also an automatic assessment stemming from the fight at 17:22 of the final period. Boll received an instigator penalty for starting the fight with Cody McLeod in Columbus' 4-2 victory.

Boll will miss the home game Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus general manager Scott Howson said.

The penalties are automatic by NHL rule 47.22, which states, "A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes of regulation time or at any time in overtime, shall automatically be suspended for one game ... In addition, the player's coach shall be fined $10,000 a fine that will double for each subsequent incident."

Boll was activated from injured reserve on Tuesday after missing five games with a possible concussion. As a rookie last season, he had five goals, five assists and a team-high 226 penalty minutes in 75 games.
