UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- Sean Bergenheim recorded his
first career hat trick as the New York Islanders handed Martin
Brodeur his first loss since returning from a four-month absence
with a 7-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.

Bergenheim completed the hat trick by scoring into an empty net
from a bad angle with 0.7 seconds remaining.

Radek Martinek, Kyle Okposo and Jeff Tambellini tallied in the
first 14 minutes, staking the Islanders to a quick 3-0 lead. New
York then withstood a New Jersey surge early in the second
period to beat the red-hot Devils for the second time in as many
meetings.

Two of New Jersey's five losses in its last 23 games (18-5) have
come against the Islanders, who posted a 4-0 win over the Devils
here on February 21.

Brodeur had allowed only four goals in winning his first four
starts since returning on February 26. The future Hall of Famer
remained three wins shy of Patrick Roy's NHL record of 551.

Brian Gionta and Jamie Langenbrunner scored in the first 4:01 of
the second period - sandwiched around a goal by Bergenheim - to
pull the Devils with 4-2.

However, Blake Comeau registered a power-play goal with seven
minutes left in the second and Bergenheim scored again 4:20
later to extend the Islanders' cushion to 6-2.

Brodeur, who faced 26 shots, was pulled after the second period
in favor of Kevin Weekes.
