The former Edmonton Oilers star winger first needs to hit the ice Saturday afternoon with his New York Islanders teammates and record a win over the Flyers in Philadelphia.

"That's the thing. We're not looking past the first period tomorrow," Smyth told The Canadian Press on Friday.

But, should they beat the Flyers, the plan for the rest of the day is obvious.

"I think we'll get together and watch the (Montreal-Toronto) game tomorrow night," Smyth said. "We'll cheer for Toronto this time around."

A Leafs victory over the Canadiens would open the door for the Islanders to beat the New Jersey Devils on Sunday and snag the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 92 points, leaving both the Leafs and Habs out of the playoffs. And to think all the focus this week was on Montreal and Toronto, few people giving the Islanders any chance of making it.

"That's what we want to do, we want to fly under the radar," Smyth said. "We'll let them bash it out and we'll just try and take care of things. You never know what can happen, I know that from last year."

Smyth's Oilers made the playoffs on the final weekend last season and went on to the Stanley Cup final. He senses his new team can have a run if given a chance.

"There's such a belief right now in this room because we feel that we're starting to accomplish something," said the native of Banff, Alta. "We've got two big wins under our belt, we're finding ways to win and everybody is contributing."

The Islanders beat the Rangers and Leafs this week to keep their playoff hopes alive.

"The big thing is that everybody is playing desperate," said Smyth, an unrestricted free agent July 1. "We just don't feel that pressure, we're just going out and playing and we're getting the end result right now."
