UNIONDALE, N.Y. - New York Islanders centre John Tavares sat out against the New York Rangers on Monday because of a concussion sustained in the season opener, and the young forward has already been ruled out of the next game, too.

Medical tests conducted Monday came back normal, the Islanders said after their 6-4 victory. Tavares is scheduled to skate on Tuesday and Wednesday, but he won't play Wednesday night at Washington.

The Islanders are being cautious with the 20-year-old Tavares, who has become the face of the franchise.

The second-year forward, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft, was injured when he collided with Dallas' Adam Burish at centre ice during the first period of Saturday night's shootout loss. He skated off the ice under his own power, but didn't return to the game.

Newly acquired forward Michael Grabner took Tavares' place in the lineup against the Rangers.
