In strangest play of the year, KHL player gets trapped in glass

Jokerit’s Tomi Maki had a game to remember on Sunday. He didn’t score a goal, nor did he register an assist. Instead, in a moment you have to see to believe, he got trapped and pinned by the plexiglass, needing several teammates and the referees to help free him.

It’s hard to imagine there will be an odder moment this season in professional hockey than what happened on Sunday night in the KHL.

In the middle of play, Helsinki Jokerit winger Tomi Maki took a hit along the boards from CSKA Moscow winger Igor Makarov. Maki wasn’t just pinned along the boards by the hit, he actually ended up pinned to the boards.

That the referees were forced to blow play down to free Maki of the glass is hilarious, if only because it gave everyone in the arena a chance to look and laugh at the Jokerit winger’s misfortune.

The referee laughing in Maki’s face is also a great moment as you can tell no matter how much Maki wants to play it cool, he can't help but chuckle at himself. The rinkside photographer trying to use his cell phone to pry open the glass so Maki can escape is also ridiculous.

All told, it took roughly six or seven people to get Maki freed, with former NHLer Niklas Hagman being the one who finally played hero, saving his teammate from the deadly plexiglass.

CSKA would go on to defeat Jokerit in overtime, by a score of 4-3.
