TORONTO - Christine“Tuffy”Hough-Sweeney and Russ Courtnall are the first couple to be iced on the second season of "Battle of the Blades."

The former NHL'er and figure skating champ were voted off the CBC-TV reality show after a live performance Sunday that saw them tackle a rock-music themed program.

The kitschy competition pairs former hockey heroes with female pairs skaters for live performances that are voted on by TV viewers.

The winning pair earns $100,000 that will be donated to a charity of their choice.

Eliminated couples receive $25,000 for a charity of their choice.

"Battle of the Blades" airs live performance shows Sundays and live results shows Mondays on CBC-TV.

Skating to "Hero" by Chad Kroeger, Hough-Sweeney and Courtnall impressed the audience with their lifts and Courtnall’s skating technique and judges Sandra Bezic, Jeremy Roenick and Brett Hull also praised their performances.

The Russian pair Katia Gordeeva and Valeri Bure, who were also in the bottom two, will remain.

The seven pairs returning to compete on Sunday are: Violetta Afanasieva and P.J. Stock, Shae-Lynn Bourne and Patrice Brisebois, Isabelle Brasseur and Todd Warriner, Katia Gordeeva and Valeri Bure, Kyoko Ina and Kelly Chase, Anabelle Langlois and Georges Laraque, Jamie Sale and Theo Fleury.
