Steve Yzerman enters his first Olympics as Canada’s director of operations, but he’ll have plenty of experienced help at his disposal for Canada’s entry in the 2010 Games.

THN.com has learned Yzerman’s boss and Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland along with Edmonton Oilers president hockey operations Kevin Lowe will be named to the Canadian management team with Yzerman Saturday afternoon in Ottawa.

Holland’s appointment creates an interesting dynamic for the Canadian team. Yzerman has spent the past two years learning the management side of the game under Holland, but will have last say on all matters regarding the Olympic team, just as he has had with the past two Canadian entries in the World Championship.

But there is little doubt Holland will be able to put his ego aside. Not only is he currently one of the best GMs in the game, he is also a consensus builder and obviously has a good eye for talent. Lowe, meanwhile, was assistant GM to Wayne Gretzky for the past two Canadian Olympic teams and brings a wealth of experience with him.

With both working so closely together in Detroit, Yzerman and Holland will undoubtedly have a positive working relationship with the Olympic team. The Red Wing presence could very well be increased if Yzerman decides to name Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock as head coach of the team.

Ironically, the Red Wings are heavily laden with European talent and, barring the acquisition of a high-profile Canadian player before the Games, will almost certainly not have any players on the Canadian roster.
