WINNIPEG - Liev Schreiber and Seann William Scott will play rival hockey goons in a new film set to begin shooting in Winnipeg next week.

"Goon" also stars Montreal's Jay Baruchel ("The Sorcerer's Apprentice"), who co-wrote the film with "Superbad" scribe Evan Goldberg.

The riotous tale is inspired by the book "Goon: The True Story Of An Unlikely Journey Into Minor League Hockey," about the real-life adventure of Doug Smith, who began skating at age 19 and literally fought his way into minor league hockey.

Alliance Films says "Goon" includes Canadian actors Alison Pill ("Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," "Milk") and Marc-Andre Grondin ("C.R.A.Z.Y.") and is directed by "Fubar 2" helmer Michael Dowse.

Scott plays a bouncer who brawls his way onto a local hockey team, while Baruchel is his best friend and Schreiber portrays another bruiser in the league.

"Goon" is just the latest in a string of films dedicated to Canada's favourite pastime—"Breakaway," with Rob Lowe and Russell Peters, began principal photography in Toronto last month while "Score: A Hockey Musical" is set to hit theatres Oct. 22.

Alliance says "Goon" is currently in pre-production and principal photography begins in Winnipeg on Oct. 18.
