Harvard goalie stops 63 shots - but still loses at Beanpot

Minnesota Wild draft pick Steve Michalek put in an incredible performance for the Crimson at Boston's NCAA classic mini-tournament, but Jack Eichel's Terriers were still too much.

Whatever they drink at Harvard, here's hoping Steve Michalek had himself a double last night. The 21-year-old goaltender stopped 63 shots against Boston University, but still came out on the wrong end of the 4-3 ledger when San Jose Sharks pick Danny O'Regan tipped a shot past him in double overtime.

Michalek's 63 saves and B.U.'s 67 shots on net were both records for the Beanpot tournament, an annual showdown between Boston's four Division 1 hockey teams. In the second game of the night, Northeastern beat Boston College 3-2 in another nailbiter.

A product of the Loomis Chaffee prep school, Michalek faced a lot of shots when he played at the Connecticut institution, catching the eye of Minnesota Wild scouts. The NHL franchise tabbed him with the 161st pick overall in 2011. It hasn't always been smooth sailing for the goalie at Harvard, but he's playing the best hockey of his college career this season and the Crimson were ranked sixth in the country before last night's game.

Though super-prospect Jack Eichel threw 10 shots on net, the 2015 draft phenom couldn't pierce Michalek's armor. But Eichel will get a chance to win the coveted Beanpot trophy next Monday when Boston U. takes on Northeastern in the final.

That match-up is also significant because Boston College had won the tourney five years running, so this year's installment will definitely have a new winner. Though it would have been exciting to see Eichel's Terriers take on archrival Boston College and Noah Hanifin (a near-lock to go third in the draft this summer), Northeastern has been hot lately and is clearly up to the challenge.
