MONTREAL - Guy Carbonneau's lucky tie is going up for auction.

The Montreal Canadiens coach said the multi-coloured tie he wore when his team won key games this season will be put up for bids in the next couple of weeks, with proceeds going to children's charities. "We talked to EBay," Carbonneau said Tuesday. "When and where, I don't know yet.

"There have been a lot of calls from charities trying to get the tie."

The expensive Hermes tie was a gift from Carbonneau's wife, Line, for his 48th birthday on March 18. He wore it the night the Canadiens clinched a playoff spot and for a win in Game 1 of the playoffs and for a Game 7 win in the opening round against the Boston Bruins.

The luck ran out as he had it on when the Canadiens were eliminated in Game 5 of the second round by the Philadelphia Flyers.

During its winning run, the tie became a local sensation. Fans began mailing in their own lucky ties, enough for the coach to fill a couple of big boxes.

"I want to thank the fans," Carbonneau added. "In the last couple of weeks, I received at least 300 or 400 ties. They were from people whose ties were special to them in some way who wanted me to wear them behind the bench.

"Obviously, there's not enough games for me to wear them all, but it was really appreciated."
