Many teams, including the Senators, Red Wings and Avalanche were thought to be in the hunt for Peter Forsberg's services.
Unrestricted free agent Peter Forsberg left practice after about an hour with the Swedish national team, the Globe and Mail is reporting.
Forsberg and the rest of Team Sweden were preparing to take part in the Karjala Cup, an international tournament that many felt Forsberg was using as a tune-up before returning to the NHL.
According to the report, Forsberg was bothered by the ankle and foot problems that plagued him for much of last season.
"It doesn't look good,” said Forsberg. “I have to say, I've never been so close to saying my career is over right now."
No official decision has been made and it is expected Forsberg will consult with North American doctors to see if they can improve his condition.
