Alex Radulov gets caught with a beautiful hip check during a game between CSKA Moscow and Dynamo Moscow (via KHL/YouTube)
Some people say the bigger ice surface gives players more room to operate, but for former Nashville Predator Alex Radulov, there was no escaping this thunderous hip check he took in KHL action Sunday. Watch as the KHL’s leading scorer goes for a ride.
When Alex Radulov once again left the NHL for KHL, some said he just wasn’t suited to the North American style of play. If the thunderous hip check he received on Sunday is any indication, there’s no style of play in any league that’s going to let you dance around the ice without harm.
Now the captain of CSKA Moscow, Radulov got a rough ride from Andrei Mironov, a young defenseman from crosstown rival Dynamo Moscow:
The cut Mironov makes to deliver the check on Radulov is phenomenal, as it looks like the veteran Russian forward thinks he’s got himself a clear lane to break past Mironov before he’s sent sprawling with a beautiful hit. Not only was the hit clean and a sight to see, it likely stopped Radulov, the KHL’s leading scorer with 53 points in 33 games, from getting a quality scoring opportunity.
North American fans may recognize Mironov’s name from the World Junior Championship tournament in 2012-13 and 2013-14 where he was part of the Russian squads that won back-to-back bronze medals. Mironov has not been drafted in the NHL, but was a fourth-round pick of Dynamo in 2011’s KHL draft.
