Flyers name Paul Holmgren general manager for remainder of season

"Paul has been working very hard and I felt that it was important at this time to provide him with some stability in his position which will help him with the tasks at hand," said Snider.

Holmgren, 50, was named interim general manager Oct. 22 after Bob Clarke resigned. Holmgren was assistant GM since June 1999, and before that was director of player personnel and director of pro scouting. The native of St. Paul, Minn., rejoined as a scout the organization he played for from 1976 to 1984. He was head coach of the Whalers until November 1995.

Holmgren was head coach of the Flyers from 1988-89 to 1991-92 after being assistant coach for three years.

His international experience includes serving as GM for the 2006 U.S. team at the IIHF world championship, assistant GM of the 2006 U.S. Olympic team, and assistant coach at teh 1998 Winter Games and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.
