Flames Watch: Standing pat a good move

It has been said, many, many times, ‘the best moves are often the ones you don’t make.’

Calgary Flames fans might want to keep that in mind in light of their favorite team’s inactivity at the NHL trade deadline. GM Darryl Sutter was apparently happy with the team he had entering the day. And why not? The Flames have proven themselves to be very competitive in the tough Western Conference and I’d say they have as good a chance as any team to make it to the Stanley Cup final.

At the end of the day, I still think the Anaheim Ducks will repeat as Cup champs, but it would be silly to suggest they’ll win it in a cakewalk. In fact, I think the Flames are the most likely choice to knock off Anaheim.

Any team with Miikka Kiprusoff in net, Dion Phaneuf on the blueline and Jarome Iginla up front has to be taken rather seriously. Add to that the fact Daymond Langkow continues to assert himself as a frontline player, Kristian Huselius has emerged as a confident scorer and Owen Nolan has found his legs. It figures the Flames are a team to contend with, regardless of the fact Sutter didn’t make a move Feb. 26.

Keep in mind, the only move Anaheim GM Brian Burke made at last year’s deadline was acquiring fourth-liner Brad May. While other teams scrambled to get rent-a-players and overpaid to get third-liners, Burke brought a grinder to town and May was a significant performer for the Ducks.

So while it might have been nice for the Flames to acquire Marian Hossa or Brad Richards or Brian Campbell, not getting them does not diminish Calgary’s chances of winning the Cup.

Sometimes the key to success is standing pat.
