CALGARY - Jim Playfair has been named head coach of Calgary's American Hockey League affiliate, the Flames announced Friday.

Playfair was the Flames' head coach in 2006-07, and had served as an associate coach in Calgary for the past two seasons. He'll serve as the first coach of the Abbotsford Heat after the Flames relocated their affiliate following two seasons in Moline, Ill.

"We consider the retention of Jim Playfair for our team to be a tremendous coup," Flames director of player personnel Duane Sutter said in a statement. "Jim has won at every level and will prove effective in directing both young and veteran players towards winning and honing their skills."

Playfair previously coached in the AHL with the Saint John Flames from 2000-2003.

"I am looking forward to stepping back behind the bench as the head coach," Playfair said in a statement. "My goal is to create an identity both on and off of the ice for our players, the fans and for the City of Abbotsford.

"Abbotsford will be a difficult place for our opponents to play."
