Fantasy Pool Look: Around the camps

Some notes and thoughts from around the league for you to take with you to the final rounds of your fantasy draft this weekend…

Salary cap restrictions forced the Anaheim Ducks to ship Bobby Ryan down to the American League. He’ll be back up when the team clears some space, but there is no telling how long that will take…

Chicago’s Igor Makarov is having a strong camp, although their recent acquisition of Joakim Lindstrom (via waivers from Anaheim) could be an indication Makarov will not make the team. However, it bodes well for 2009-10. He’s that good and he’s that close…

Andy McDonald looks like his old self again in the pre-season. He played through nagging injuries last season after a short summer coming off winning the Cup with the Ducks. This past summer, however, was quite long in St. Louis. McDonald is fully healthy and showing it with his big production on a line with Lee Stempniak and Brad Boyes…

The Oilers made a surprising cut in Ryan Potulny and they could make another one soon in Gilbert Brule. Brule is still a top prospect, but playing eight minutes a night for a team like Columbus really hammered his confidence, so playing a year in the AHL to regain his scoring touch would work wonders for him. Rob Schremp is having a strong camp. Neither Schremp nor Brule will put up big numbers in the NHL this year, but don’t give up on them. Both could be had for a song in keeper leagues and would be worth sitting on until next year…

Erik Ersberg has had a rather weak camp for Los Angeles. The 26-yar-old goaltender had an opportunity to seize the No. 1 job from Jason LaBarbera after his strong play down the stretch last season. That chance has slipped through his fingers and LaBarbera will continue to be the man in L.A…

Max Pacioretty is making a case to stay in Montreal this season with his solid pre-season play. The team needs a big forward with skill and he is that and more. Nobody expected this to be the year he made the jump (he’s only 19), but if the team does decide to keep him, here’s hoping he gets the ice time needed to develop (see Brule above)…

Patric Hornqvist has been playing on a line with J-P Dumont and Jason Arnott. The Swedish rookie stands to put up a lot of points if he can hang onto that gig – a spot previously held by Alexander Radulov. Look for 40 to 45 points this year, if he makes the team…

Defenseman Anssi Salmela, 24, is still making his mark in New Jersey and has the inside track on a power play quarterback job. The 24-year-old undrafted Finn had 32 points in 56 games in the Finnish League last season and the Devils have struggled to fill a void with the man advantage left behind by Brian Rafalski when he left for Detroit a year ago. Salmela makes a great dark horse…

Flyers prospect Claude Giroux surprisingly had a disappointing training camp and was cut. Picked by some to not only make the team, but to also be a contender for the Calder Trophy, Giroux didn’t handle the puck with the same confidence he did at last year’s camp. Andreas Nodl, another highly skilled winger in the system, was thought to be further away from the NHL, yet he is still with the Flyers. If Nodl makes the team, it won’t be to kill penalties. Keep an eye on him…

In the end, it was the strong play of Bill Thomas that outclassed the strong play of Janne Pesonen. Pesonen was the last cut made by Pittsburgh, which means Thomas is an excellent dark horse. Thomas is a goal-scoring winger and all Penguins who fit that description get a shot on one of the big lines.
