Fantasy Pool Look: Arnott finds consistency

It's been a long time between career years for Jason Arnott. A dozen to be exact.

Arnott has not reached the 68-point mark since his rookie season for the Oilers in 1993-94. His next point for Dallas will give him 68, and he has 13 games to reach, then surpass, that mark.

After his impressive freshman campaign, fantasy owners felt Arnott, the 1993 seventh overall pick, would be an 80-point player in no time. But as season after season went by the wayside, it seemed Arnott had found his niche in the 55- to 59-point range.

Well, 12 years later, Arnott may see that 80-point plateau after all.

The key for Arnott this season has been his consistency. Only twice has he gone more than two games in a row without a point.

A secondary factor in his breakout is the fact he hasn't missed a game this year. Arnott has never played a full NHL season before, so that in itself is a milestone.

Hockey pool owners are happy with both milestones, and there is no reason to believe that at 31 years of age, he will slow down in 2006-07Â…

Sharks captain Patrick Marleau has a new winger playing with him on the second line, and his name is Steve Bernier. Bernier, a rookie, has seven goals and 11 points in eight games with the bulk of that production either the result of a Marleau setup, or setting up Marleau. The two have shown some nice chemistry early on. The 20-year-old Bernier was San Jose's 2003 first round draft pick (16th overall) and has an NHL upside of 70 pointsÂ…

Rangers defenseman Tom Poti has just one point in the seven games he's played since Sandis Ozolinsh arrived at the trade deadlineÂ…

Edmonton rearguard Jaroslav Spacek has 14 points in 18 games since his arrival from the Blackhawks near the end of JanuaryÂ…

Injuries, from a fantasy pool perspective: Nashville has some help on the way. Yanic Perreault (knee) should be back this weekend and Scott Walker (wrist) could be back by the middle of next weekÂ…

Farm Report: Blackhawks prospect Tony Salmelainen, acquired from Edmonton in the Spacek trade, has 55 points in 53 games for HIFK Helsinki in the Finnish League. The 25-year-old is leading his team in scoring and is excited to return to North America in the fall. The diminutive left winger will have every opportunity to win a spot with the Blackhawks.
