Ducks winger Lupul to undergo back surgery, out six to eight weeks

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Anaheim Ducks winger Joffrey Lupul is due to undergo back surgery and will miss six to eight weeks.

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle confirmed Lupul's lengthy absence to reporters Wednesday before the Ducks met the Vancouver Canucks at General Motors Place.

Lupul missed his third straight game with a herniated disc that has bothered him for much of this NHL season. It kept him out of seven straight games between Nov. 21 to Dec. 3.

He had only been back for three games, but scored four goals over that span.

The 25-year-old Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., native has 10 goals and four assists in 23 games this season.

His absence deals another blow to the Ducks, who rank near the bottom of the overall standings. Anaheim is already missing forwards Teemu Selanne and Ryan Carter to long-term health problems.

Selanne is out four to six weeks with a fractured hand, and Carter missed his 18th straight game with a fractured foot.
