Ducks' Andersen robs Erat, ties 70-year-old record with 50th win

Frederik Andersen won the 50th game of his career in his 68th career decision Wednesday night, tying the record set by Hall of Famer Bill Durnan. Andersen did it in style, too, robbing Erat with a ridiculous glove save.

Frederik Andersen had missed the last 10 Anaheim Ducks games due to an upper-body injury, so what better way to come back than with a one-goal against performance that included an unbelievable glove stop and a milestone?

With his victory last night, Andersen tied Bill Durnan, the former Montreal Canadiens netminder, as the fastest goalie to 50 career wins. It was only Andersen’s 68th career decision, and that ties Durnan’s record that was set 70 years ago.

It wasn’t a walk in the park for Andersen, either. Early in the second period with the Ducks up 1-0, Andersen was forced to make an incredible diving glove save on Martin Erat. After Erat shoveled the puck towards the net, left vacant following Andersen’s committal to a shot from the blueline and a subsequent deflection, Andersen dove back to his left and robbed Erat:

If Andersen was going to tie the milestone, it looks like he wanted to do it with style.

Though it’s extremely difficult to compare goaltending generation over generation due to the litany of variables, Andersen’s feat is still remarkable. Durnan may not have had the shootout in his back pocket, but he had the benefit of playing for one of the greatest teams in NHL history during a six-team era.

If the shootout was non-existent – and those wins or losses were replaced with ties – Andersen would have a record of 43 wins, nine losses and 16 ties. But he’s also facing shooters that are bigger, stronger, faster and more accurate.

What’s next for Andersen? Maybe chasing down Durnan’s 100 wins in 139 games. Andersen has 71 decisions to accomplish the feat.
