Rookie defenceman John Klingberg had a coming out party against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. His two goals and two assists made him the youngest Dallas Stars rookie to score four points in a game. And he did it as a defenceman. When Swedish defenceman John Klingberg made his SM-liiga debut as a 19-year-old, he put up one goal and three points in 20 games for Jokerit. He beat those numbers in one game as a Dallas Stars rookie on Saturday. Now 22, Klingberg became the youngest Stars rookie to record a four-point night on Saturday with his two-goal, two-assist performance in the Stars’ 5-2 win over the Jets. Per Elias Sports Bureau (they know stuff about sports):
Per @EliasSports: John Klingberg (2-2--4) is first rookie defenseman in @DallasStars history to record a 4-pt game. pic.twitter.com/TdVqy086WU — NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) February 1, 2015Klingberg was a power play dynamo against the Jets, with all four of his points coming on the man advantage. He led all Stars defencemen with 7:17 in power play time and played 22:38 on the night – one shift more than his average of 21:13. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound defenceman has been a strong offensive producer on a weak Stars back end this season, with nine goals, 24 points and a plus-nine rating in 35 games this season. He’s also on an impressive scoring streak, with five goals and 11 points in his last eight games. The Stars’ 131st choice from the 2010 draft trails only Trevor Daley for the lead in team defencemen scoring despite having 11 fewer games played. He’s also just four points behind Aaron Ekblad for the scoring lead among rookie defencemen, again with 12 fewer games played. Nevermind Jokerit – Klingberg hasn’t scored at this pace since putting up 11 goals and 28 points in 50 games with Frolunda of the Swedish League last year. See for yourself. The kid's great at moving the puck.
