Dale Weise buries OT winner to put Ottawa on brink of elimination

Dale Weise had three post-season goals in his career heading into Sunday evening's Game 3 tilt with the Ottawa Senators, but almost doubled his career production with a two-goal night. First, Weise tied the game up with less than six minutes left in the third and then won the game midway through overtime.

Late in the third period of Game 3, with Montreal down 1-0 to the Ottawa Senators, Canadiens coach Michel Therrien trotted out a line consisting of Torrey Mitchell, Brandon Prust and Dale Weise. With less than six minutes remaining in the frame, Weise cashed in to tie the game which sent the contest to overtime.

If the premonition to throw that line together and run them out with time winding down in the third looked brilliant on Therrien's part, he looked like an evil genius in the extra frame. Weise took only five shifts in the entire third period, but in overtime, Therrien put his rugged winger out three times before the halfway point of the period.

As the 10-minute mark loomed, Weise picked up the puck in the neutral zone, skated into the Senators' zone, pulled up and fired a quick wristshot past Ottawa netminder Craig Anderson:

Making the overtime winner even more heart-breaking for the Senators is that they had just managed to kill off a Curtis Lazar minor penalty for boarding thirty seconds earlier. Down a man, Anderson had made a dazzling glove stop, but then allowed the Weise winner on a shot many Senators fans will claim he should have had.

With the goal, Weise's second of the evening and of the post-season, the Montreal Canadiens now have a 3-0 stranglehold on the series and can complete the sweep Wednesday in Ottawa.
