Curtis McElhinney's great glove save leaves Sidney Crosby shaking his head

Curtis McElhinney made an incredible stop on Sidney Crosby last night that left the Penguins’ superstar shaking his head. McElhinney stretched out and robbed Crosby as he had a clean look at a nearly wide open cage.

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Curtis McElhinney has won just 39 NHL games in his seven-year NHL career. But even without a ton of wins in his back pocket, at least he’ll be able to tell his kids about the time he made a nearly unthinkable save on the best player of his generation.

During Thursday’s contest against Pittsburgh, there was a scramble in front of McElhinney’s crease that left the puck on the stick of Sidney Crosby with almost an entire cage to shoot at. Nine times out of ten, the result is Crosby raising his arms in celebration, but McElhinney flashed the leather and robbed Crosby of a sure goal.

How often do you see goaltenders make that save on Crosby? It’s almost unthinkable that he gets stopped point blank like that. And the stop must have driven Crosby mad, because mere minutes later he was throwing his gloves off to tussle with Brandon Dubinsky.

The Blue Jackets held on to their 1-0 lead until midway through the second period when Evgeni Malkin beat McElhinney. However, a late Dubinsky shorthanded goal would prove the difference as the Columbus downed Pittsburgh 2-1.
