TORONTO - The National Hockey League has suspended Phoenix Coyotes winger Shane Doan three games for an illegal check to the head of Anaheim Ducks forward Dan Sexton.

The play occurred at 6:35 of the third period in Sunday's game between the clubs, when Doan threw a shoulder into an unsuspecting Sexton moments after he had just passed the puck up the ice.

No penalty was called on the play, but NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell said Monday there will be no tolerance for such contact.

"Doan delivered a late hit from the blind side to the head of an unsuspecting opponent," the executive vice-president of hockey operations said in a release. "While it was fortunate that Sexton did not suffer an injury, the message should be clear that this is the type of hit that we want out of our game."

Doan will miss games against Los Angeles on Thursday, Carolina on Saturday and Montreal on Monday, and will forfeit US$73,387.11 in salary.

He is eligible to return Oct. 26 at Ottawa.
